So... Could we be Talking Ourselves to Death?

A Recent Study indicates that we may be killing ourselves by talking too much!

At the risk of getting smacked up side the head by my beautiful and charming wife I'll admit to being one of those 'typical males' who thinks women talk too much.  Okay... okay, I know--it's not just women, men are guilty of using 50 words when 10 would most likely get the job done just as easily.  Goodness knows, I've kicked myself more than once for having continued talking when I should have just shut up!

But I digress... (and use too many words - LOL).  I just wanted to share this 'study' with you to see what you think about this study and others like it.  Could this be a real risk to us or is this just another example of the media jumping on a story (or non-story) before the facts are clearly evident?  By the way, for those who wonder what the study is about, it indicates that cell phones are dangerous to our health.  In fact, the author of the study claims: "It is anticipated that this danger has far broader public health ramifications than asbestos and smoking," says Professor Khurana..."

I, for one, am a bit weary of all the 'scientific' claims of doom and gloom.  Perhaps we are 'killing' ourselves by worrying about things far too much.  Most of my great aunts and uncles were heavy smokers (something I personally find gross and disgusting) and most of them lived rather healthy lives well into their 80's.  They also loved butter, cream, and 'fatback' (I don't know what it is but it sure does make collard greens taste good!)

So, what do you think?  Should we try to 'relax' a little more and simply enjoy life to its fullest?  I'm all for giving it a try!

I think we all talk too much.  I took a communications class in college and the professor always told us: "Never speak when you have an opportunity to listen."

I do find I talk too much, and much of it is just venting.  After it's out, I can move on!

yes, most realtors talk to much.  my average listing presentation is 15 minutes.  i try to close from the beggingin if they are ready to list then why talk more?  just sign the papers.  I prequalify my listing apointments the night before by asking "will you be listing your home when we meet?" if they say no... i ask "if i show you i'm the right agent to sell your home will you ist with me tommorrow?"  everyone says yes...

I was born to talk too much!  My father had two brothers and two sisters and growing up I couldn't get a word in on family discussions.  They all talked too much.  Now I try and, notice I say. try to listen.  I think listening is a gift -- I certainly don't have it, but I'm working on it.

On another note Tim, each time I told my mother about another one of my healty diets, she often reminded me of our relatives pushing up daisies in Forest Hills Cemetery who loved buttermilk with cornbread crumbled on top.  Yuck!  Yes, to collard greens but only with fatback.  I was also born to eat!

Duane, with my propensity to put my mouth in gear before my brain I learned a looooong time ago to just wear the helmet at all times! ROFL

Annette, I love to eat too! Although I was raised in the city, my mom was/is a great small town country cook.  Hmmmm, mmmmm, good!

I have lived through "butter is good for you", "butter is bad for you", "wine is bad for you", "wine is good for you" and I could go on and on. Here's a truth for you. You are going to die. SOMETHING is going to kill you sooner or later. Enjoy the time between now and then!

T & S,

I wish I could relax! I worry about everything, all the time. Real estate isn't for the timid anyway, but I let the little things get to me. I was the chair for our BOR awards banquet last week, and it nearly killed me!

BTW, I had a job in JAX for six months in the late 70's, and I loved the area! Does the Mayport Ferry still operate?

Tim, Unfortunately I find that just because someone is talking it doesn't mean a) they are really saying anything or b) anyone is listening . . .  What, what did you say. LOL  As for food, I think my dad was MR. Butterton . . . and we lived in cattle country, so we ate a lot of red meat. . .  ummm ummm good.  I want to go with steak and a buttery baked potato in my tummy and talking everyone's ear off! OHHH YEAH

Richard,

Yes, the ferry still runs and we enjoy the short ride from time to time.  The city has changed COMPLETELY since the 70s and for the better in my opinion.

Speaking of the ferry, it may not continue as we now have cruise ships that sail from here and there is talk of building a new port for the cruiselines right in Mayport - something the local shrimpers are NOT happy about at all.  They like their quaint village-like atmosphere and fear that would be lost.  They are probably right but progress is progress and it will mean a lot of money so it is probably inevitable.

We need to spend more time listening and les talking. Listening is virtually impossible with you mouth moving.

T & S,

We can't stop progress. But I enjoyed many a visit to Little Talbot Island State Park. The beach was beautiful, the fishing was great ... I MUST try to get down to Duval County this year before there are too many changes!
